Mirena®
Manufactured by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals Inc., Mirena® is a small, plastic, hormone-releasing device placed in the uterus. Designed to prevent pregnancy for up to five years, Mirena® gained Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for use in contraception in 2000. In 2009, the treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding was approved as an additional indication. The device does not protect against HIV or other sexually transmitted infections and is recommended for women who have had at least one child.
Common side effects include changes in bleeding pattern, cramping, and ovarian cysts. Women who use Mirena® may also experience the following serious injuries:
• Ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy occurring outside of the uterus)
• Sepsis (infection)
• Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
• Punctured uterine wall
• Migration of the device to other parts of the body
