The Sidney Shainwald Public Interest Lecture Series

 

The Sidney Shainwald Public Interest Lecture Series at New York Law School, established in 2004, has attracted notable and distinguished speakers: special master of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund, Kenneth R. Feinberg, gave the inaugural lecture, “the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund: Public Law and Private Pain”; United States Senator Edward M. Kennedy discussed “Justice—What’s Ahead?”; United States Supreme Court Justice Stephen G. Breyer spoke on “Reflections of a Supreme Court Justice”; and in 2007 United States Senator Chuck Hagel discussed “Re-Introducing America to the World.”

 

The Shainwald Lecture Series was established by Sybil Shainwald, a 1976 graduate of New York Law School and a member of the school’s Board of Trustees to honor her late husband Sidney, an impassioned consumer advocate. By bringing together public interest and consumer advocates, the Lecture Series continues Mr. Shainwald’s work and promotes the importance of law in the public interest.

 

The Shainwald Lecture Series brings together an audience committed to public service and to the ongoing development of programs and policies that promote the public interest. This has been and will continue to be an outstanding lecture series.

 

The Sidney Shainwald Public Interest Lecture in April of 2009, hosted the distinguished guest speaker The Honorable Jack B. Weinstein, Senior Judge from the Eastern District of New York who spoke brilliantly on “Changing Equalities.” The speaker for the 2010 Sidney Shainwald Public Interest Lecture was The Honorable Sandra Day O’Connor, retired United States Supreme Court Justice.
