Medical Devices & Procedures

The attorneys at the Law Offices of Sybil Shainwald, P.C., have represented women who have suffered from the effects of dangerous medical devices and failed medical procedures. If you believe that you have suffered from the problems and effects associated with the following devices or procedures, please contact our office. Our consultations are free and we look forward to helping you.

LAP Band Surgery

The LAP Band is a type of weight loss surgery that alters the actual size of your stomach.  It is dangerous and being targeted to women.  The surgery is portrayed as being simple and having few risks, but this is not the case.  We are aware of at least three recent death cases that have been filed.  In Neelu Pal v. New York University, a doctor here in New York gave the facts regarding the dangers of the procedure.  It was shown that the level of expertise, preparation, and care has been substandard. Women who do not fit the criteria are still receiving the surgery.  Do not have this surgery and contact us if you have any questions.

Chorionic Villus Sampling

Chorionic villus sampling (CVS) is a test done during early pregnancy that can find certain problems with your baby (fetus). Studies have linked CVS to birth defects, abnormalities in physical or mental structure or function that are present at birth. They range from minor to seriously deforming or life threatening.

Fibroid and Uterine Artery Embolization

This procedure uses a slender, flexible tube (catheter) to inject small particles into the uterine arteries, which supply blood to your fibroids and uterus. The goal is to block tiny vessels that lead to your fibroids, starve the fibroids and cause them to die. Serious possible complications include injury to the uterus from decreased blood supply or infection.

Surgical Mesh

Surgical mesh, including Kugel Mesh and Mersilene Mesh, is often used in a procedure known as transvaginal placement of surgical mesh.  This procedure is used to treat Urinary Stress Incontinence (USI) and Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) in women.  In October 2008, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) warned that transvaginal placement of surgical mesh had caused serious and painful complications in hundreds of women.

Tension-free Vaginal Tape

This device is used as a pubourethral sling for the treatment of female stress urinary incontinence resulting from childbirth, causing urethral hypermobility. It also treats intrinsic sphincter deficiency (ISD).
